Last week we looked at How to Meditate on Pleasant Feelings, and being able to meditate on pleasant feelings is a great practice. However, meditating on unpleasant feelings can also deepen your practice. 

Meditation is such a beneficial practice, because it allows a person to be in tune with their heart and mind. In many circumstances, a person already knows what they want to experience. 

Unfortunately, elements like logic and ego tend to get in the way of a person honoring what they truly want. People will naturally do all they can to protect themselves, but there are times when that can lead to a state of dissatisfaction and unhappiness. 

There is a way to meditate on unpleasant feelings 
and use that meditation to get to a better mental state. The steps below will guide you through it:

1. Get Quiet
2. Take Note of the Feelings that Surface
3. Understand their Root
4. Consider Ways to Change the Conversation
5. Let them Go
6. Consider Solutions Outside of Yourself

If you’ve gone to a place where you can’t move past unpleasant feelings, it’s okay to seek additional help. 

Sometimes getting a private session with a meditation teacher, counselor, or meditating in a group can help to guide you through the release those negative emotions. Emotions and mental chatter are the most difficult part of your meditation practice, so don’t give up. By working through these emotions, you can move closer to tranquility, understanding yourself, and helping others on a deeper level.

⁠Do you ever look back and feel completely diffe ⁠Do you ever look back and feel completely different about a situation or person that once made you angry or sad? ⁠

Or how about the opposite, has there ever been a time when you had pleasant feelings about a memory, and years later it now leaves a bad taste in your mouth?⁠

This is normal and just the nature of the thoughts that flow in and out of the mind.⁠

And I hope this realization ultimately liberates you from those thoughts. I hope you see how completely unreliable they are and use this as proof to not believe most of what floats around in our heads. ⁠

Even with certain knowledge that is concrete like science, things are constantly being discovered and new information emerges that alters what we know. ⁠
⁠
Ask yourself, if a person in your life was as mercurial and as manic as your thoughts, how much stock would you put into what they say? ⁠
⁠
So, give yourself a break today, and how about you don't listen to that inconsistent friend we all have roaming around in our minds?⁠
